LeBron James to sit out as Cavs go for franchise record

Superstar forward LeBron James will sit out his first game on the season tonight when the Cleveland Cavaliers face the Indiana Pacers at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, league sources informed ESPN. A James team has never started 9-1.

In 10 games this season, the four-time MVP is averaging 23.4 points, 9.6 assists, 8.9 rebounds.

On Sunday afternoon - with J.R. Smith on the shelf with a sore right ankle - the Cavaliers got a combined 35 points from Channing Frye and Iman Shumpert in the 100-93 win, Cleveland's seventh in their last eight against Charlotte. It will be the first time these division rivals have met this season. In the October 28 meeting in Toronto, the large Lithuanian doubled-up with 10 points and a game-high 17 rebounds against the Wine and Gold. Cleveland beat Toronto 121-117 on Tuesday night.

"It doesn't matter about LeBron not playing", Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue said.

Even without Swish, the Cavaliers set an National Basketball Association mark on Sunday, becoming the first team to can at least 10 three-pointers in their first nine games of the season. They have lost their five away games with an average point differential of 14.

"We had our chances", Love said.

Cavaliers: Smith has missed the last three games.

In their two consecutive losses, the Indiana Pacers came up empty against two fellow East teams during a "two games in two nights" schedule.

Friday's IN home game against Phoenix coincides with the 30th anniversary of the classic 1986 basketball movie "Hoosiers" and will be the first of six Hickory Nights, IN which the Pacers will wear Hickory Huskers replica uniforms from the movie.
