Black Twitter reacts to Dylann Roof refusal to save his life

That's because at his SC hearing on Wednesday, the 22-year-old white supremacist made it clear to the court he has no intention of challenging his death penalty ruling! Roof will represent himself for the remainder of the federal trial, in which prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

In addition to the federal trial, Roof faces nine murder charges and three attempted murder charges in state court. He said would make an opening statement but would call no witnesses or present any evidence.

Dylann Roof, 22, also confirmed that he intends to represent himself during the stage in which the jury in the SC court will decide whether to execute him or imprison him for life.

The convicted Charleston church shooter will return to a federal courtroom Wednesday morning ahead of his sentencing. He requested that Roof at least speak with his former attorneys and his grandfather, a respected Columbia lawyer, before reaching a final decision.

Gergel also told Roof he will give him until the start of the penalty proceedings to change his mind about serving as his own counsel.

"Well, don't do them any favors", Gergel told the defendant, who appeared in the striped uniform of the Charleston jail as well as handcuffs and leg shackles.

Roof confessed to killing nine parishioners during the June 2015 attack at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C. He was represented by a lawyer during the guilt phase of the trial but was ultimately convicted December 15 on all 33 federal charges.

"You know my feeling on this", Gergel said. Survivors Polly Sheppard and Felicia Sanders, who testified during the guilt phase, are expected to testify again.

But "representing himself" is a loose term to use here as so far, Roof has offered no real defense of himself.

Prosecutor Jay Richardson says he could call more than 30 witnesses related to the victims, and that's not even counting a collection of other various witnesses that he might call. Roof agreed to do so.
