Haslam backs Trump's pick for US Education Secretary

In a scathing memo sent Monday to Donald Trump's pick for education secretary, Betsy DeVos, Sen. "[Weingarten] claims that an agenda that promotes school options is anti-public education".

"She will insert a profit motive into children's education that will cripple our public schools and punish the millions of students who attend them everyday", Takano said.

There is a push, too, by her supporters to persuade the education panel to confirm her as education secretary, which seems likely despite the outcry against her.

"As a highly successful businesswoman, DeVos doesn't need the job now, nor will she be looking for an education job later", Romney states in the piece. It's just another example that Trump doesn't know what he's doing in government.

"We...can not support a nominee who has demonstrated that she seeks to undermine bedrock American principles of equal opportunity, nondiscrimination and public education itself", the Leadership Conference wrote.

Pocan, D-Black Earth, announced the creation of the House Public Education Caucus Tuesday morning, alongside national teachers unions presidents Lily Eskelsen Garcia of the National Education Association and Randi Weingarten of the American Federation of Teachers, and other Democratic members of the U.S. House.

Put simply, I believe in public education. A group of Senate Democrats, including Ohio's Sherrod Brown, have sent DeVos multiple letters that urge her to pay the fine.

In as much as I have devoted my career to turning that belief into reality, Betsy DeVos has poured both her time and her millions into attacking it.

Warren pointed to what she called DeVos' "deep record of activism, bankrolling and lobbying for policies that would privatize public education" without meaningful accountability. "She has lived in a billionaire bubble of privilege".

Another caucus member, Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.), said he has never worked as a teacher, but his years in the Wisconsin Legislature showed him the havoc school choice can wreak on children. She has never been employed by a public school.

"Our public schools are one of the cornerstones of our democracy", Ravitch declared.

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requires secretarial approval of state education plans for standards, tests and accountability.

DeVos' hearing starts Wednesday at 10am.
