Red Cross: We need donations for all blood types

The American Red Cross is making a plea for blood donations after snow and ice caused cancellation of 27 blood drives throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. This is partially because of severe weather across the country in November and December.

Snowstorms and bad weather led to the cancellation of nearly 100 blood drives in December, causing the Red Cross to miss out on several thousand donations. "We encourage donors to invite a family member or friend to donate with them to help meet patient needs".

It comes as NHS Blood and Transplant wages a renewed campaign to encourage some of the large number of non-donor adults to make a blood donation.

Spokeswoman Laura McGuire explained blood is being sent to hospitals faster than it's coming in.

Donors of all blood groups are needed.

You can find a blood donation opportunity and schedule an appointment to donate by using the free Blood Donor App, visiting or calling 1-800- 733-2767. "This simple act can have a profound impact on another human being", Gehrig said in the release.

January 11, 11 a.m. -4 p.m., Pruis Hall, McKinley Avenue, Ball State University, Muncie.

Friday, Feb. 3, 1 to 6 p.m., Searsport Lions Clubhouse, 44 Prospect St., Searsport.

The American Red Cross says it received 35,000 less units of blood than officials anticipated for the holiday months.

According to The American Red Cross, every two seconds someone in the USA needs blood.
