Watch April the giraffe's newborn calf take first wobbly steps

HARPURSVILLE, N.Y. (AP) - The long-awaited offspring of internet sensation April the Giraffe is being described as strong and "very independent".

The not-yet-named male baby giraffe was running around with its mother within three hours of birth at the private zoo in Harpursville, a village 130 miles (210 kilometers) northwest of New York City. Zoo owner Jordan Patch said both mom and calf were doing fine.

The zoo began livestreaming from April's enclosure in February.

April is said to have recovered perfectly and is eating "everything in sight".

Prior to the calf's birth on Saturday at around 10 a.m., many people had questioned whether April the giraffe's labor is just an April Fool's prank. There people can submit potential names for the male calf and/or vote for their favorite names.

Now that the baby giraffe has finally arrived, many of his ardent new fans are asking, "What's his name?"

The giraffe calf that was anxiously anticipated by live stream viewers around the world got a thorough checkup from a vet on Sunday, his second day of life.

"His entrance into the world was unnerving to even those of us who have witnessed animal births previously", Patch said in the statement. The calf will weigh around 150lb and will be about 6' tall at birth.

The park's livestream in the giraffe pen, a huge hit since going live on February 22, continues to rank among YouTube's top five trending videos. The calf weighs 129 pounds and is 5-feet-9.

April has her own website and even an apparel line.

Giraffes are pregnant for 15 months on average, and the wait for April to give birth had raised global interest, with a livestream and a fundraising drive.
