Goins' hit caps comeback as Blue Jays beat Indians 8-7

TORONTO (AP) — Kevin Pillar homered with two outs in the ninth inning to give the Toronto Blue Jays a 3-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday and a sweep of their four-game series. Smoak lined a bases-loaded single over the head of shortstop Segura, who had shifted out behind second base, and Pearce followed with his fourth home run.

In the stands was Pillar's mom Wendy, dad Mike and wife Amanda and 42,030 ecstatic Jays supporters who nearly blew the lid off the stadium.

After touching home plate, Pillar escaped his roughhousing teammates and bolted for the home dugout at Rogers Centre. "I didn't want it to rip completely".

"If I would have come up here and been successful right away, who knows where I'd be at right now", said the former all-American at Cal State.

"It was good, nice to finally get back out there", Sanchez said.

Pillar was still wearing his jersey during an on-field television interview moments later when infielder Darwin Barney doused him with Gatorade. I had to do a double take to one: make sure it was actually 7-7, and two, to discover it was only the fifth inning.

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Marcus Stroman throws against the Seattle Mariners during the first inning of a baseball game in Toronto on Saturday, May 13, 2017.

"There's been many times in my career when I tried to go up there and be the hero and ended up popping up or getting out", said Pillar.

"For me, I've got to live on the edge", Vincent said. Coghlan was hit in the hand by a pitch in the sixth. He allowed only four hits, walked none and struck out three in a tidy 68-pitch effort, leaving with one out in the sixth after Jean Segura singled up the middle. He didn't figure in the decision.

He did not allow an earned run over four innings in his first start last Sunday and impressed again Friday against the Mariners.

UPDATE: According to a club announcement, Steve Pearce left Sunday's game with right calf tightness.

The Mariners moved in front 1-0 in the fifth when Carlos Ruiz scored on a throwing error by Jose Bautista in right field. Yadier Molina offered Wainwright all the support he needed with two homers, the first a two-run shot in the bottom of the second off Jake Arrieta (4-3). It was the 35-year-old Machi's first stint in the big leagues since 2015, when he pitched 58 innings for the Giants and Red Sox.

"It's a feeling you can't describe".

"We didn't specifically plan to use it more but it's definitely something we talked about wanting to work in regularly", said Biagini.

Blue Jays right-hander Aaron Sanchez (blister) was activated off the 10-day disabled list before the game, and allowed one unearned run in five innings.

With all this going on under the management of John Gibbons, the team has been on a shortage which have sent them chasing some of those with the Buffalo Bisons, as well as on the market for alternative options who could fill the empty shoes. "Maybe it was a hemorrhoid or something".

Sanchez acknowledged that his finger was bleeding at times during the game, but said it didn't affect him. Sanchez wasn't thrilled to be asked about the bleeding.

Martin's trip to the DL came on Monday. The Jays are going for a third series win in a row and the fourth of the season, against the visiting Mariners.

"It was good, nice to finally get back out there". "I thought the start against Tampa Bay there would be no issues and today reassured that there were none". After his failed start on April 30 because the nail split, he returned to the DL. He threw his fastball in 96 miles per hour range and snapped off a number of curves, the pitch that affected his finger the most. I felt a little jumpy. (The struggles) gave me a chance to go down to triple-A and refine my approach and think about all the failures I had up here. "Just go out there until I reached my pitch count".
