Lester pitches 4-hitter as Cubs beat Cueto, Giants 4-1

Lackey allowed just four hits and two walks with 10 strikeouts over seven scoreless innings in Tuesday's win in Game 2 against the Rockies.

Blach (2-2) got quick support with runs in four of the first five innings, including a leadoff home run by Joe Panik. Panik hit an RBI double and scored on Belt's single in the third.

The Cubs added two runs as Zobrist hit a two-run homer to right off Law, trimming the deficit to 6-4. Rendon drove in five runs for the 27-win Nationals while Bryce Harper went back-to-back with Jayson Werth in the club's eight-run fourth inning.

Johnny Cueto screams into his glove after the fourth inning, in which he allowed a two-run Anthony Rizzo homer.

Brandon Belt also connected and Ty Blach (2-2) pitched into the eighth inning in the first meeting between the teams since San Francisco was eliminated by Chicago in the N.L. Division Series past year.

Giants closer Mark Melancon faced four batters in a scoreless ninth for his ninth save.

Meanwhile, the Cubs are 5-2 in their last seven home games versus a left-handed starter, and 20-8 in their last 28 Wednesday games. Lackey gave up five runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking a pair.

"Honestly, I threw the ball better tonight than the last three", he said. In his first start since September, Peacock allowed the lone hit and struck out eight in 4⅓ innings.

It will be interesting to see how Matt Harvey is received by Mets fans when the embattled pitcher makes his first start at Citi Field since serving a three-day suspension for skipping a game this month following a late night on the town. I've said it a million times, and I hate to beat a dead horse with it, but, I feel like when we pitch well, we don't hit, and when we hit, we don't pitch well.

But the Giants opened a 5-0 lead by scoring in each of Lackey's last three innings.

YANKEES 4, ROYALS 2: At New York, Didi Gregorius, Brett Gardner and Chris Carter homered, and New York once again downed Jason Vargas by beating Kansas City.

Top WPA Play: Rizzo's blast to right center and Schwarber's blast to Navy Pier tied for the highest Cub WPA play of the night (+.103).

The victory was the second straight for Lester (3-2), who struck out a pair in the ninth and is now 5-1 lifetime against San Francisco.

"I have nothing to complain about", Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. Since 2015, the Cubs are 7-1 at home against the Giants in regular season games only. Posey got one hit with a run on Tuesday; Nunez went 1-for-3.

Giants: CF Denard Span was sidelined by a sprained left thumb. But Maddon did not specify how soon that might occur.
