Microsoft launches Surface laptop, streamlined Windows 10

Microsoft showed off a number of new products made for students and teachers at its #MicrosoftEDU event, including a new operating system and laptop. In some countries (read China), Bing will be replaced by regional search providers, but again, Windows 10 S users won't be able to alter these settings. Find out what it means for you below.

Windows 10 S offers speed, with the operating system capable of booting in just 15 seconds. The Edge browser will be the "only" default browser on Windows 10 S machines. Secondly, it's less demanding on the system so it works faster and uses less power. However, it is to be noted that those who upgrade their devices to Windows 10 Pro will not be able to return to Windows 10 S.

The latter might come as a disappointment seeing as the lack of traditional desktop software is arguably one of the main reasons Windows RT - a lightweight, mobile-friendly variant of Windows 8 - failed.

The response of customers, particularly in the education sector, to Windows 10 S remains to be seen. So, we're taking a new approach: "simplify to magnify", said Terry Myerson, Microsoft's Executive Vice President of the Windows and Devices Group.

Microsoft has decided to make a streamlined version of Windows 10 to cater mainly to the education sector. If you want to use an EXE application as a Windows 10 S user, you will have the option to upgrade to a full version of Windows. The aim with the Surface Laptop and the Windows 10 S OS is to create a device that is simple and secure, geared toward the education market-the same strategy Google pursued with the Chromebook.

If users try to install an app from outside the Windows Store, they will be directed to the same app in the Windows Store, or if one isn't available, an equivalent program will be suggested. He added, "I personally like to think of it as the soul of today's Windows". Windows 10 S will be ready "this summer in time for the new school year". This is possible because Windows 10 S is a lightweight version of Windows 10, with less hardware configurations that will allow it to be run on cheaper and less powerful computers as low as $189. This could count as a major drawback for the baby Windows 10.

As it is available out of the box on new machines, it won't cost you any extra.
