Modi, Sonia condole demise of actor-politician Vinod Khanna

However, on receiving the news of their beloved and honorable actor Vinod Khanna's death, they canceled the event. Khanna separated from his first wife, Geetanjali, in 1985.

India's president Pranab Mukherjee led tributes to the star of films such as Amar Akbar Anthony, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar and Mere Apne.

Bollywood veteran Vinod Khanna has died at the age of 70 at a hospital in Mumbai.

A much sought after actor in the 1970s and 1980s, he acted in several blockbusters, including Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Reshma Aur Shera, Elan, Insaaf, Qurbani and Dayavan.

Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan were also seen arriving at the crematorium. He was at his peak of his career in the 70s and 80s but in 1982, Vinod left the cinema behind to follow the path of his guru Osho Rajneesh. Since 1968 he was working in film industry till 2013 and appeared in around 140 films.

Vinod Khanna also starred in Salman Khan's Dabangg series and his last onscreen performance was 2015 film Dilwale, co-starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol.

Khanna was also an active politician, and a Member of Parliament from Gurdaspur, Punjab.

Born on October 6, 1946 in a Punjabi family to Kamla and Kishanchand Khanna in Peshawar, Vinod studied commerce at Mumbai's Sydenham College before moving into acting. The sitting BJP MP had won the seat four times.

Khanna's contemporary Shatrughan Sinha described his death as a personal loss.

Rishi Kapoor and Vinod Khanna were the best of friends and have worked together in exceptional movies like Amar Akbar Anthony, Eena Meena Deeka and Chandni. Rajamouli said in his twitter message: "RiP Vinod Khanna ji".

He wrote, "As a mark of respect to our beloved Vinod Khanna the entire team of Baahubali has chose to cancel the premiere tonight..."

"Condolences to his family", he said on Twitter.
