Ross Barkley: Everton star issued stark ultimatum by Ronald Koeman

And, speaking on Thursday, Toffees manager Koeman said: 'We need an answer before next week.

Barkley has just one more year on his contract with Everton but has so far refused to put pen to paper on a new deal as he considers his future.

Ronald Koeman has now set a week's deadline for the Englishman to sign a new contract.

As reported by the Independent, Koeman said: "It is still one week. We all know it will be hard".

"If you take so much time [to sign], you have doubts [about staying]".

" It needs to be next week, because if we go for a holiday we need to know if we need to sell the player". The board is working a long time for Ross to stay for a long period.

In recent months we've also seen Koeman pick fights with Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill and hold nothing back in his assessment of Oumar Niasse, who has since been sent on loan to Hull. "We have already tried to get players in for next season in the front positions". Toffee's manager Ronald Koeman has also already indicated that the Merseyside club will sell the England worldwide, should he not agree to fresh terms soon. "He knows what he needs to improve", said Koeman, who had no update on the striker's future.

He has struck up a good understanding with Premier League top scorer Romelu Lukaku, and his performances in 2017 in particular have caught the attention of north London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham, with the latter touted as the favourites to land him this summer.

Mazzarri, though, remains focused on getting the best of his team for the last few weeks of this season rather than worrying about which players might be brought in over the summer.
