The American rider is being taken care of at the Maurizio Bufalini Hospital in Cesena but the medic's report isn't that good.

Nicky Hayden before last year's Australian MotoGP at Philip Island.

He won three races in a career from 2003-2015, before switching to Superbike full-time, although he made two starts in MotoGP previous year to fill in for injured Honda rider Jack Miller.

Hayden, from Owensboro, Kentucky, was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital near Rimini before being transfered to the facility in Cesana.

The American, who won the title in 2006, was struck by a auto while training on a bicycle along the Rimini coast and admitted to a local hospital, before being moved to the Maurizio Bufalini Hospital in Cesena.

"The young man, who is still in the intensive care unit of Cesana's Bufalini hospital, has suffered a serious polytrauma with subsequent serious cerebral damage", read a statement from the hospital.

The 35-year-old was placed into a medically induced coma after the incident, the BBC reported.

He was joined by his fiancée Jackie along with his brother Tommy and mother Rose, at the hospital. He was transported to a local hospital before being moved to Cesena.

Italian great Valentino Rossi, who leads the MotoGP championship and is racing in France this weekend, hailed his former teammate.

"Nicky is one of the best friends I have had in the paddock", said the Italian, who lost the 2006 title to his friend by just five points. He started 216 races between 2003 and 2015, winning three.

"Come on Nicky, we're all with you". This incident took place in Rimini in Italy, this Wednesday afternoon, and the site of a auto after that collision, shows the horrific intensity of this crash.

The dangers of training on public roads have been highlighted in recent weeks by other accidents affecting professional athletes.
