Annual Congressional baseball game brings unity after shooting

Scalise and three other people were shot early Wednesday at a park in suburban Washington as they practiced for a congressional charity baseball game.

After visiting Scalise Wednesday evening at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, Trump tweeted: "Rep. Steve Scalise, one of the truly great people, is in very tough shape - but he is a real fighter".

The 51-year-old Republican congressman from Louisiana underwent another surgery on Saturday, the hospital treating him said, which was at least his third operation since being transported to the facility.

Republicans and Democrats have swapped political insults for friendly rivalry at their annual congressional baseball game in honour of House of Representatives politician Steve Scalise, critically injured in a shooting rampage. Scalise was reported to have been tended to by Rep. Brad Wenstrup of OH, a US Army Reserve doctor who served in Iraq, before his treatment at the hospital.

Capitol Police, who provided security for the practice, killed the shooter, identified by authorities as James Hodgkinson, 66, from Belleville, Ill.

Hodgkinson - an IL home inspector who had been living out of his van near the park - had a social media page filled with criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration.

"I hope he's in good enough shape to watch, because he'll certainly feel good about what he sees", Flake said.

"I had no idea this was going to happen and I don't know what to say about it".

Colleagues said Scalise, who had been fielding balls at second base, dragged himself away from the infield, leaving a trail of blood before they rushed to his assistance.

Members of Congress have made a point of showing support for Scalise, who remains in the hospital Thursday night.

Rep. Cedric Richmond, the Democrats' star player, said he planned to stop by the hospital to check on Scalise before heading to the stadium.

The two have enjoyed a long-running ribbing over the game, which Republicans won last year to break a seven-year Democratic win streak. She called for increasing the budget for the Capitol Police force, so they'll just have a lot more resources to deal with threats as they arise.

Doctors treating wounded House Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise have upgraded his condition from "critical" to "serious". On Thursday night, almost 25,000 were in attendance at Nationals Park, the stadium of the Washington Nationals.

The mood at the Capitol remained somber Thursday, as members learned more about Scalise's condition and signed giant "get well" posters for him and others injured.

Texas Rep. Roger Williams said that one of his aides, Zack Barth, was shot but was doing well and expected to fully recover.

The game, which was broadcast live on cable news, showed Democrats and Republicans coming together on the diamond of the Washington Nationals. "We have an Italian American connection", Pelosi said.

"It's been much more hard than people even thought at the time", Trump said.

Wounded U.S. Capitol Police officer David Bailey set aside one of his crutches and threw out the game's first pitch.

The team of Democrats and Republicans holds an annual softball game against female journalists.
