He said in one incident a family of four died in a fire caused by lightning, while another person died due to a building collapse.

At least eight people have been killed in a storm that swept into the Cape Town area of South Africa.

This comes a few weeks after Cape Town organised an inter-faith prayer service on the Table Mountain for rain during the ongoing drought in the region.

The storm hit the Cape Peninsula early on Wednesday morning, which some have described as the "worst storm in living memory". Two people were injured when a roof blew off in Lavender Hill.

Western Cape authorities ordered for the closure of schools and universities in the province on Wednesday for the safety of students and teachers. "Investigations [are] under way to see how [we can] capture urban storm water at a greater scale and then store it for later treatment and use".

With hopes high that the storm will mark the beginning of the end of the worst drought in a century‚ De Lille urged Capetonians to harvest as much rainfall as possible.

The SA Weather Service's Julius Mahlangu says at the most, KZN can expect temperatures in the low to mid 20s and stronger than usual winds for the rest of the week. "In this instance, we [are] on the side of caution to ensure all necessary preparations are in place", provincial government spokesperson Micheal Mpofu said in a statement on Tuesday.

Uprooted trees blocked roads across the city‚ and numerous residents tweeted their appreciation of City of Cape Town emergency teams who quickly removed the obstacles.

"Our primary concern is the safety of learners and staff", says Brian Schreuder, head of Education Western Cape.

Schools remained closed across the province on Wednesday.
