Int'l Yoga Day marked by millions in India, where it began

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recognised yoga as a form of traditional medicine.

Recalling how the United Nations gave its nod for International Day of Yoga, Modi said there might not be a single country where yoga-related programmes are not held.

The Ayush Ministry released the budget of 25-30 cr for the 3 worldwide yoga day celebration.

- Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) June 21, 2017Let us pledge today to make Yoga an integral part of our daily routine & practice Yoga regularly.

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police jawans today performed yoga at almost 18,000 feet above the sea level in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, at a temperature of -25 °C to mark the third International Yoga Day.

Baba Ramdev and Amit Shah also shared pictures of the yoga session on their twitter handles. "The practice, which connects body, mind and soul, has played a big role in binding the world too", Modi said. Since then, the popularity of yoga is increasing across the world rapidly.

PM Modi also stressed on the importance of wellness apart from physical fitness and said that Yoga was a medium to achieve wellness. The enthusiasm was such that even rains, 2 hours prior to the yoga session, did not deter the people from going ahead.

Prime Minister Modi kickstarted the third edition of International Yoga Day today at Ramabai Ambedkar Maidan in Lucknow. It sounded like the rain was about to hit the grounds, but the spirit of people was no stained, thousands of people actively took part in the event and the photographs are now going viral on the Internet.

But not everyone was enthusiastic - an influential hardline Islamist group in Bangladesh called for Muslims to boycott a yoga event organised by the Indian High Commission (embassy). Modi was accompanied, among others, by the governor of Uttar Pradesh, Ram Naik, and the chief minister of the territory, Yogi Adityanath. The event made it to the Guinness World Records with 35,985 participants performing asanas at one venue and 84 nationalities being part of it.

Several government employees and officials also participated in a yoga session led by Minister of State for Agriculture Sadabhau Khot at the state secretariat.

After concluding his speech, Modi walked to an enclosure and performed yoga with almost 100 students.
