PM Nawaz Sharif addresses SCO summit in Astana

To enhance the capacity of member states in coordination and implementation in the security field, Xi called on the SCO to strengthen regional counter-terrorism institutional building and resolutely crack down on illicit drug manufacturing and trafficking. "We propose to resume the activity of the SCO-Afghanistan contact group that was suspended in 2009".

Xi said China attaches great importance to its ties with India and stands ready to work with the Indian side to enhance political mutual trust, link their development strategies, deepen practical cooperation and maintain coordination and collaboration in global and regional affairs, so as to advance their strategic cooperative partnership in a sustained, healthy and stable way.

It is the first between the two leaders after India boycotted the high profile Belt and Road Forum held in Beijing in May in which 29 world leaders took part. India abstained from the "One Belt, One Road" or OBOR summit to highlight its concerns over the $50 billion China Pakistan Economic Corridor, which passes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

While emphasising that connectivity with SCO countries is India's top priority, Modi said that such projects should not impinge a country's sovereignty.

A welcoming ceremony was held here in which Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif was warmly received by Kazakh president in the powerful Eurasian body. China has said that it supports Iran's membership of the security bloc, as requested by Russian Federation, and that the subject is under discussion at the summit, despite having been refused a year ago.

On Thursday evening, Modi exchanged pleasantries with his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif at a reception amid escalating Indo-Pak tensions over a range of issues.

Chinese President Xi Jinping today told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he watched Aamir Khan- starrer sports drama Bollywood film Dangal and liked it.

A summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is under way in Kazakhstan's capital, Astana.

At the summit in Astana, India and Pakistan will become the full members of the grouping.

"We want to deepen the focus on connectivity", PM Modi said while addressing the leader of other member countries like China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

"We spoke about India-China relations and how to further improve ties", Modi tweeted after his meeting with Xi.

China also said on Monday it supported Iran's membership.

China signed an agreement with Kazakhstan to supply the latter with super computer equipment, and the two countries are discussing the signing of a renewed investment protection deal, he said.
