Trump appears to confirm he's under investigation

If Rosenstein goes, who replaces him?

Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, sent out spokespeople and surrogates with a far-fetched cover story to explain the dismissal, and then told NBC's Lester Holt that the real reason for the firing was Comey's pursuit of the Russian Federation investigation.

Earlier this month, Rosenstein told The Associated Press that "if anything that I did winds up being relevant to his investigation then, as Director Mueller and I discussed, if there's a need from me to recuse, I will".

US President Donald Trump has issued a stream of tweets defending his record and lashing out at the investigation into Russian interference in last year's US presidential election.

"The FBI leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal", Mark Carallo told the Washington Post".

Rosenstein also has authority to fire Mueller, if he finds evidence of good cause.

His comments follow revelations that special counsel Robert Mueller is examining whether Trump obstructed justice by firing FBI Director James Comey.

Brand was confirmed as the No. 3 Justice Department official on a 52-46 vote in the Senate on May 18, with Democrats lining up against her. Rosenstein also approved the appointment of Mueller as special counsel after the recusal of Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Mueller also has expansive powers to investigate any matters that develop from his initial investigation. That falls to Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein, who was asked this by Republican senator from Maine Susan Collins at a hearing on Tuesday.

President Donald Trump says it's "sad" that seven months of investigations and hearings into possible links between his campaign and Russian Federation have been fruitless.

And if Rosenstein and Brand were both out of the picture, responsibility for the investigation would fall to Dana Boente, the acting head of the department's national security division and the current USA attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Oddly enough, Boente was acting deputy attorney general when Sessions recused himself, and until Rosenstein was appointed.

Allies have even floated the idea that Mueller may be fired.

The latter being Trump's effort (dutifully followed by his media groupies) to slime Mueller and the talented legal team he has assembled. "The Department of Justice has a long-established policy to neither confirm nor deny such allegations". "However, nothing has changed", said Ian Prior, a Justice Department spokesman.

From 2011 until her confirmation, she was a lawyer for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce business lobbying group's legal arm, which played a major role in marshaling legal opposition to environmental and labor regulations championed by Democratic former President Barack Obama. When Comey was deputy attorney general in the Bush administration, he appointed a close friend and former colleague, Patrick Fitzgerald, as special counsel to investigate who leaked the identity of Valerie Plame, a covert Central Intelligence Agency officer.
