Portland Police did not immediately respond to a request for more information about the apprehended suspect.

The confrontation reportedly began when Christian started verbally harassing two teenage girls - one of whom was wearing a hijab - and lobbing anti-Muslim slurs at them on a MAX train in Portland.

Jeremy Joseph Christian, described in media reports as a "known white supremacist", is in custody for the murder of Best and Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche, a recent college graduate. A third man was stabbed, but survived.

A wallet from inside the backpack is still missing.

George Tschaggeny, 51, has been accused of second-degree abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence, identity theft and second-degree theft.

Authorities also recovered Best's missing backpack, although officers said some items, like the Army veteran's wallet, were missing.

Tips poured in Thursday night after police released surveillance images and video of the suspect. "It's completely heartless. There's no other way to describe what happened", Simpson said. He was wearing a black T-shirt with an image of Marilyn Monroe and an American flag.

Christian attacked the men after they tried to protect two young black girls at whom Christian was yelling racist and anti-Muslim remarks.

Police say the backpack contains "personal items important to the Best family", but declined to give additional details.

Following the attack, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler published a statement in which he lauded Best, Meche and Fletcher as heroes. "I hope they all die". I understand that is no measure against their grief. Stabbing suspect faces 9 chargesChristian faces nine charges: two counts of aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder, first-degree assault, three counts of unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of intimidation. CNN has reached out to Christian's attorney for comment.
