Florida sinkhole swallows two homes, threatens others

A large sinkhole swallowed two homes and continues to grow in a neighborhood in Land O' Lakes on Friday morning.

Video from the scene shows a house crumbling to the ground as sirens wail in the background.

At 7:25 a.m. on Friday, 911 dispatchers received a call about a boat that was falling into a hole that had formed at 21835 Ocean Pine Drive in Land O' Lakes.

The sinkhole started out as the size of a small swimming pool but keeps growing.

Part of the home next door also collapsed into the sinkhole.

The sinkhole then swallowed the home.

"What can you say?" said a resident of one of the homes. "This is something we've never seen before", he said.

Crews are holding a 200-foot perimeter from the edge. As of 10:03 a.m. officials considered the sinkhole still active.

The local energy company has cut off electricity to the area as a precaution, according to ABC Action News.

Authorities said they voluntarily evacuated 11 residences in the area.

Authorities said the neighborhood has experienced a sinkhole before.

The Red Cross will be assisting the evacuated residents.
