Israel refused to remove the detectors, claiming the security measures are similar to procedures taken at other holy sites around the world.

Since then, Palestinian Muslims have been holding the daily prayers outside the gates, insisting they will not enter it for worship until the metal detectors are removed.

It was not immediately clear if this means long-standing security coordination between Israeli troops and Abbas' forces will be halted.

Israeli forces raided the home of an alleged Palestinian attacker who killed three Israeli settlers and wounded another on Friday, the military said on Saturday, and vowed to destroy the family abode.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said four officers were injured in the sporadic clashes and the Palestinian Red Crescent ambulance service said at least 377 protesters had been hurt, some suffering from tear gas inhalation.

One Palestinian was shot dead by Israeli gunfire in the A-Tur neighbourhood of east Jerusalem, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

In addition, hundreds of Arabs were wounded as thousands people continued to violently protest the installation of security measures at the Temple Mount following the murder of two Israeli policemen on July 14.

The Arab League has called an emergency meeting of the Arab foreign ministers on Wednesday to discuss Israeli violations against Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque.

A small pro-Israeli group also gathered in front of the embassy, however, British police directed them to the back of the building when tensions between the groups raised.

Two Palestinians were martyred in clashes with Israeli occupation forces Saturday over restrictive Israeli measures at Al-Aqsa holy Mosque.

Palestine's ruling party Fatah praised the Palestinians, who protested in Jerusalem over metal detectors being installed by Israel at the entrances to the sacred Temple Mount compound.

By contrast, the Red Crescent reported at least 450 Palestinians were wounded in the demonstrations, almost half from tear gas.
