In a closed-door meeting held in the Parliament, 18 opposition parties unanimously chose to appeal to Gopal Krishna Gandhi to contest the vice presidential elections.

According to sources, the meeting by the 17 opposition parties in Delhi today, Gopalkrishna Gandhi's name was the only one discussed for the candidature.

Informally, opposition leaders had been discussing possible candidates for the last few days and had agreed to put a final seal of approval on Gopal Gandhi's candidature at the meeting convened by the Congress President.

In addition to his surname, Gopalkrishna Gandhi has a distinguished track record. The NDA led by the BJP will be naming its candidate by July 13. Leaders from 18 Opposition parties met at the Parliament House and unanimously picked Gopalkrishna.

Gopalkrishna Gandhi was earlier said to be in the race for the opposition's presidential candidate. It was learnt that there is a broad consensus on the person not being from the Congress camp after Meira Kumar's nomination as presidential candidate.

India's vice presidential elections will he held on August 5.

Election for the next Vice-President of the nation will be held on Aug 5. Gandhi also served as Ambassador of India in Iceland.

The leaders also observed a two-minute silence at the start of the meeting to condole the deaths of seven Amarnath pilgrims in a terror attack in Kashmir on Monday. Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, her deputy Rahul Gandhi, former prime minister Manmohan Singh, TMC's Derek O'Brien, CPI (M)'s Sitaram Yechury, SP's Naresh Agarwal, NC's Omar Abdullah, JD (S)' Deve Gowda, BSP's Satish Chandra Mishra and RLD's Ajit Singh were among those who attended the meeting. The Secretary General of Rajya Sabha is the returning officer for the polls.
