Cyber Hackers Beware, US Elevates Military Command of Cyber Threats

"This new unified combatant command will strengthen our cyberspace operations and create more opportunities to improve our nation's defense", President Donald J. Trump said in a written statement. For example, there is a Special Ops Command and Strategic Command. Cyber Command's mission is to shut down and, when ordered, counter cyber attacks.

At a Pentagon briefing, Kenneth P. Rapuano, the assistant secretary of defense for homeland defense and global security, said Defense Secretary Jim Mattis will recommend a nominee to Trump to head the new Cyber Command. Cyber Command's elevation reflects a push to strengthen US capabilities to interfere with the military programs of adversaries such as North Korea's nuclear and missile development and Islamic State's ability to recruit, inspire and direct attacks, three USA intelligence officials said this month, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

"I also appreciate the administration's commitment today to ensuring that a future separation of the so-called "dual hat" relationship between Cyber Command and the National Security Agency will be based on conditions, rather than arbitrary political timelines", the senator said.

Both Cyber Command and the NSA are now headed by Adm. Mike Rogers. Elevation will also ensure that critical cyberspace operations are adequately funded.

Congressional notification began Friday morning and the White House is expected to make the announcement the same day that Trump gathers with his national security team to discuss South Asia strategy at the presidential retreat at Camp David. Lindsey Graham of SC and John McCain of Arizona.

Last year, former Defense Secretary Ashton Carter sent a proposal to then-President Barack Obama to make Cyber Command an independent military headquarters and separate it from the NSA.

It was not immediately clear whether North Korea's cyber threats were a major focus. It also defends the United States from digital threats and cyberattacks on key federal and military systems. It will establish a cyber version of the nuclear doctrine of "mutual assured destruction" between the United States and the former Soviet Union, the three US officials said.
