"They raised the Iraqi flag on the citadel", said General Abdulamir Yarallah, commander of military operations in the battle.

"On the [Tal Afar] city plan, nothing is left [seized by terrorists], the cleanup is underway", Jubouri said.

Ahmed, who covered the Mosul offensive extensively, said that the Tal Afar operation is very different since the ISIS group did not put up much of a resistance.

The facility was captured on day six of the military operation to liberate the town of Tal Afar which has been under the control of the jihadist group since June 2014.

On Saturday, the joint commend said it had attained 90 percent control of the city center.

France has around 500 troops fighting alongside forces of a US-led coalition, the second largest contributor to the global coalition that has carried out thousands of airstrikes against the IS in Iraq and Syria, and provided military equipment, training to Iraqi forces.

As government forces advanced, troops said they discovered a network of underground tunnels used by the jihadists to launch attacks behind lines of already conquered territory, or to escape.

The aerial and ground offensives to recapture Tal Afar, located 70 kilometers (43 miles) west of Mosul, from the militant IS group started earlier this month.

Tal Afar experienced cycles of violence between Sunni and Shia Muslims after the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Government troops and units of the Hashed al-Shaabi paramilitary coalition launched the assault last Sunday after weeks of coalition and Iraqi air strikes.

Before the war in the region began, the number of residents was around 200 thousand; however, today it is estimated that only 10 to 20 thousand citizens remain. "Prepare yourself, the battle is imminent and the victory is coming, God willing", the leaflets read.
