Lahore truck blast kills 1, injures 46; Shahbaz Sharif orders probe

Pakistani security forces killed four Taliban militants in the eastern city of Lahore hours after a truck bomb killed one person and wounded 22, authorities said on Tuesday.

"The explosive material was planted inside a truck which was loaded with fruit", said Abdullah Khan Sumbal, a high-ranking government official, on Monday.

The injured, including women and children, were rushed to the nearby hospitals for treatment.

Earlier in July, at least 26 people were martyred in a suicide attack in the Ferozepur area of the provincial capital. Incidentally, Nawaz Sharif's cancelled Sunday rally was scheduled to pass through the route where the truck was parked, leading some to conclude that the former Prime Minister might have been the intended target. Meanwhile police have cordoned off the entire area.

Most of the injured has been discharged after the first aid. The large store of explosives in the truck could also be used to launch a major attack inside Lahore.

Reportedly, the truck had arrived from Swat and was in the area since the past three days.

DIG Haider Ashraf confirmed that it was a bomb blast and said that the blast has created a huge crater at the blast site.

The truck was completely destroyed in the explosion while nearby building were also damaged. A number of bikes and cars were damaged due to its intensity. In April, six people including army personnel died in a suicide hit on a census team on Bedian Road.

Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Shehbaz Sharif has instructed police authorities to file a report of the incident.

In February, a suicide bomber killed 14 people, including senior police officers, near the Punjab Assembly here.
