Man arrested after police attack outside Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace is tonight on lockdown after police arrested a man who allegedly attacked two officers armed with a sword in front of frightened tourists.

"Two police officers suffered minor injuries during the course of detaining the man". He has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and assault.

Footage from the scene shows a heavy emergency response, including multiple police cars.

A large number of police vehicles could be seen in the Mall, the wide road outside the palace, after the incident.

During the altercation, the suspect apparently inflicted "minor injuries" on the two officers, who are otherwise reported as doing fine. Paramedics treated them at the scene, they were not taken to hospital. Police would only confirm that the man had a knife.

Queen Elizabeth II was not in residence at her palace when the incident took place.

Officers remained on the scene late on Friday evening as investigations were carried out.

The police said it was too early to know whether it was terror related.
