Star Wars launches augmented reality experience for Force Friday II

Star Wars launches augmented reality experience for Force Friday II

And soon after, it was revealed exactly what this mission was - an expansion of the AR feature on the Star Wars app to feature characters tied to the next movie and its merchandise.

Lucasfilm announced today that Force Friday II would have the added bonus of launching their new Augmented Reality (AR) experience: Find the Force. The establishments will hawk merchandise from "The Last Jedi," the follow-up to 2015's "The Force Awakens", which inspired the initial Force Friday, so expect some incredible finds, along with the chance to fraternize, at least technologically, with the characters.

Lest you think this is a minor PR stunt, Find the Force will be available in 20,000 stores in 30 different countries, including Best Buy, Apple, Kohl's and Petco (?).

While some characters will be fan favorites, some are brand new characters who won't be seen until The Last Jedi hits theaters December 15.

Most retailers will, of course, also be aiming to sell Star Wars toys. "Star Wars has always championed new technology, and we are excited that augmented reality will allow fans to experience the universe in a whole new way".

When you scan a code it will show one of 15 characters in the app which will rotate across the entire three-day run of the promotion.

Download the Star Wars app (for iPhone® and Android™) and launch the "Find The Force" feature.

The experience runs from September 1 through September 3, but a sneak peek of one of the new characters is already available if you download the app now.

In certain areas around the world, people sharing pictures and videos with the AR characters via Twitter or Instagram using specific hashtags across the weekend will be entered into sweepstakes.
