Passengers say the 17-year-old United States citizen, who was traveling alone, had appeared "anxious" and "fidgety" throughout the Copa Airlines flight from Panama City, per KGO and the San Jose Mercury News. Yakel said the teen is a US citizen and was traveling alone. The teen was not injured in the incident.

People are seen looking out of an open emergency exit door on a Copa Airlines flight into San Francisco on Tuesday. An investigation is now being conducted by Customs and Border Protection and at present, there is no information about the boy's reasons for his actions. A man from Arthertor named Matt Crowder, who was also traveling on the same flight, said that the people who were sitting near the exit stood up in shock and started shouting as soon as the boy jumped off.

He has been detained for questioning by police and will be transported to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

The boy reportedly started running on the tarmac before being intercepted by construction workers.

Fellow passengers said the boy appeared to be in some kind of emotional distress during the flight.

Passenger Isaac Rodrigues said a flight attendant used her body to block the gap where the door had been until the plane was at a gate. Law enforcement took the teen into custody, according to the airline. "We are cooperating fully with the relevant authorities to support the ongoing investigation".

In 2014, a passenger on a China Eastern Airlines plane said he wanted to "get off the plane quicker" and deployed the emergency slide after the plane landed at Sanya Phoenix International Airport.
