Mexico's president says 22 people have died at a school that collapsed in the nation's capital due to Tuesday's 7.1 magnitude quake.

Thirty people died in Mexico City, the Associated Press reported, quoting the city government.

Less than a month after the strong 8.1-magnitude quake in Mexico, a 7.1-magnitude natural disaster struck the country, killing at least 224 people. Evacuation drills had been held in the country on Tuesday's anniversary. The highest toll, he said, was in Morelos State where 55 people were killed.

About 2 million people in the Capital Mexico City were without electricity, and phone lines were also down. There were reports that people were trapped in collapsed buildings, and videos showed volunteers attempting to dig out rubble.

About 40% of Mexico City remained without power as rescue workers dug through the night in search of survivors.

President Enrique Peña Nieto visited the site earlier in the evening and was besieged by desperate parents, telling him that their children were missing. It added that the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City is also ready to provide assistance to U.S. citizens who were possibly affected by the quake. "We are with you and will be there for you", Trump said. Mexico City's global airport suspended operations. "The navy was out and the damage is quite widespread across many parts of the city", he said.

(Spanish) 2274 "The ground started moving, it was very strong, the windows started to break, people started to leave their homes, this building in front collapsed". The disaster came as Mexico was still reeling from a powerful tremor that killed almost 100 people in the south of the country less than two weeks ago.
