40 killed in Mogadishu bomb blast

At least five killed in Somalia earlier this year after vehicle full of explosives rammed into a café.

At least 20 people are dead and 15 injured following a powerful explosion from a truck bomb on a busy road in the Somali capital. We have never seen such death and destruction, said Abdukadir Haji Aden, director of the main ambulance service in Mogadishu.

According to witnesses, the vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) has gone off at busy intersection, Zoobe Area in downtown Mogadishu, sending volumes of smoke to the sky.

Bodies and bloodied slippers and shoes littered the roadway.

"There was a traffic jam and the road was packed with bystanders and cars", said Abdinur Abdulle, a waiter at a nearby restaurant.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack but authorities have ideas on who it could be since they have carried out other attacks in the past.

Windows were shattered for blocks around the epicenter of the carnage. Overturned cars burned in the street.

The hotel is close to Somalia's foreign ministry, which has been under tight security with military-manned checkpoints.

Saturday's blast comes two days after Somalia's defence minister and army chief both resigned from their posts without explanation.

Government security official Mohamed Aden said that bombing took place in a busy part of the city.

Somalis gather and search for survivors by destroyed buildings at the scene of the blast.

Police fear many casualties after auto bomb explodes outside a hotel on a busy junction in the centre of Somali capital. "Two civilians were killed", Siyad Farah, a police major, told Reuters, adding that a suspect had been caught on suspicion of planting explosives. While the group has lost large swathes of territory and was forced out of Mogadishu by African Union troops in 2011, the Shabaab continues to stage regular attacks in the capital and countryside.
