Polestar 1 Immediately Gets Rendered as a Shooting Break, It's That Beautiful

The Polestar 1 hybrid GT coupé pinpoints its plan to become the new electric performance brand (Tesla, among others will have something to say about that).

In a move away from the traditional ownership model, Polestar cars will be ordered online and offered on a two- or three-year subscription.

The Polestar brand is following the route to market already announced for Geely's Lynk & Co SUV brand, which will also expected enter the United Kingdom market in 2019 offering a range of vehicles build on a Volvo chassis platform. The Polestar 1 will be the halo offering of the Polestar brand and is a four-seater 2-door coupe that is essentially a coupe version of the Volvo S90. It measures in at 4500mm long, some 650mm shorter than the S90.

A new Öhlins Continuously Controlled Electronic Suspension (CESi) with advanced chassis technology should make it a sharp handler, something they are emphasising as a USP v Tesla.

Taking a leaf out of BMW i's book, and offsetting a good chunk of the battery weight, are carbonfibre body panels that Polestar claims reduces bodyweight by a 230kg, and usefully lower the centre of gravity. Braking is handled by 400mm discs with six-piston callipers manufactured by Akebono.

There is a new double electric motor system driving both rear wheels.

When the engine is combined with the electric power system, the auto will be able to produce 600hp, taking it into the realm of high-performance vehicles. Enough for a proper-sized commute without troubling the 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine.

The Swedish auto maker took the wraps off the "Polestar 1", a luxury four-seater hybrid coupe in a ceremony in Shanghai - its first salvo as it positions the brand as a competitor to Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) and Mercedes's (DAIGn.DE) AMG division.

Now, Volvo, which has previously said all of its vehicle models launched after 2019 will be electric or hybrids, is aiming for that electric-cars-are-fun-to-drive sweet spot that Tesla has dominated. A post from Polestar on the company's official Instagram page indicated in two separate comments that the subscription service won't be the only option.

Obtaining a new Polestar 1 will be a much different practice than most customers are likely familiar with.

"Volvo Cars and Polestar will also benefit from synergies in the development of next-generation technologies such as shared procurement costs, joint development and economies of scale", a statement added.

"Polestar 1 is the first vehicle to carry the Polestar on the bonnet", he said. "A handsome GT with cutting edge technology - a great start for our new Polestar brand".

Its output of 440kW and 1,000Nm of torque places the auto firmly in the performance segment.

Starting production after the 1 in late-2019, the 2 will be the first BEV from Volvo Car Group, with volumes to be higher than that of the coupe model.
