Protest against White Supremacist Speech in Florida, USA

Hundreds of protesters had gathered outside of the University of Florida on Thursday to protest Spencer's appearance.

MI attorney Kyle Bristow had been threatening to sue Ohio State and the University of Cincinnati on behalf of Padgett if they refused to rent space for Spencer to speak.

They say Tenbrink fired one shot, hitting the building behind the victim.

Two men who allegedly urged him to shoot face the same charge.

The men fled in the Jeep, but were located at about 9 p.m.on Interstate 75, about 20 miles north of Gainesville, authorities said.

Gainesville Police Spokesman Ben Tobias said in a statement, "I am amazed that immediately after being shot at, a victim had the forethought to get the vehicle's license number".

Florida Governor Rick Scott declared a state of emergency in Alachua County ahead of Spencer's appearance at the University of Florida. He is also being charged as a felon in possession of a firearm, police said. Detectives said Tenbrink admitted to the shooting, according to his arrest report.

Tenbrink, a convicted felon, showed a handgun after exiting the auto while one of the Fears brothers shouted "I'm going to f*****g kill you", police said. We want to show our teeth a little bit because, you know, we're not to be taken lightly'.

That meant a state of emergency being declared in Gainesville by Gov. Rick Scott, the influx of more than 1,000 law enforcement officers to watch over almost 2,500 demonstrators and a virtual suspension of normal campus life - not to mention the outsize attention Spencer craves.

Columbus attorney Michael Carpenter wrote that the decision was made after university officials conferred with law enforcement authorities and considered what had occurred during Spencer's speech on Thursday at the University of Florida campus in Gainesville. And even after Spencer's "Unite the Right" rally on a Virginia campus in August devolved into violence and left a woman dead, UF administrators could not prevent his visit, they could only prepare for it. Fears told NBC that Spencer's speech will "normalize the idea for white people to have an identity, to advocate for their own interests and to advocate for our own existence".
