Rahul Gandhi gets permission to visit Amethi

"To my mind, there is a general sentiment in the party that he should take over as the party president", Pilot said while speaking to news agency PTI.

Earlier, Amethi District Magistrate Yogesh Kumar had requested Congress district president to reschedule visit of Rahul Gandhi, from October 4 to October 6, in the view of Muharram and Durga idol immersion. Pilot is himself the son of the deceased former Union minister and Congress leader Rajesh Pilot.

Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi's plans to visit his parliamentary constituency Amethi in UP from October 4-6 resulted in the state government requesting the Gandhi scion to reschedule his visit due to "security issues" triggering a heavy backlash from the Congress.

While the Congress termed the Amethi district administration's move as "politically motivated" and under "pressure", the BJP found nothing wrong with the same.

The old guard of the party has been wary of Rahul's style of functioning - many party veterans who quit the Congress in the past three years, mostly to join the BJP, had blamed their decision on Rahul. Pilot added that Gandhi's elevation had been in the pipeline for long. "Organisational elections of the Congress are underway and the new president could take over shortly after Diwali". The party's Central Election Authority (CEA) is finalising state lists of the electoral college for the election of party president. "Many of their leaders are also from political families", he said.

This Diwali will give Rahul Gandhi a much awaited promotion in the party, as per latest information, he is likely to replace mother Sonia Gandhi as the chief of Congress party.

Echoing similar sentiments, district Congress chief Yogendra Mishra said Rahul was coming to meet the people of his constituency and he can not be stopped.

Further taking a specific jibe at the rival BJP, Pilot added, "We will not form a margdarshak mandal to humiliate the senior leaders of of our party".
