3 killed in stampede in Bihar's Begusarai

Authorities confirmed that the three persons killed were women and said efforts are on to identify the bodies.

The stamped on the ghat took place in Bihar on the bank of Ganga river in Begusarai district.

The holy dips began at 2 am on Saturday, and the crowd surged and became uncontrollable by 4 am.

Local TV channels showed footage of the crowded bathing spot where the incident took place and reported that a rumor led to a stampede. "In addition to two SIs and one ASI, three Bihar Military Police (BMP) constables-Ruby, Puja and Monica Kumari- have also been placed under suspension", said the SP.

According to eyewitnesses, the deceased include two young men and two old women. There was no immediate information available on what may have caused the stampede at Simaria Ghat.Sources said the death toll might go up.

"We are trying to ascertain the cause behind the stampede", Kumar said. "The IG zone and the DIG range would also take stock of the situation".

The incident occurred in a narrow lane next to the Simaria ghat, where people had gathered in large numbers on the occasion of Karthik Purnima, said Sadar Deputy Superintendent of Police Mithilesh Kumar.
