George HW Bush Openly Criticizes Trump in New Book

His son, George W Bush, said he worries that "I will be the last Republican president", even though President Trump is a Republican.

Updegrove said the book title came from a comment made by the younger Bush previous year.

"Blowhard" is a casual term for a person who is boastful or blustering, the Oxford English Dictionary says, and it is usually meant as an insult. After Carter said Trump was being given a hard time by the media, the latter thanked him by tweeting his thanks for the "nice remarks ..." I don't know much about him, but I know he's a blowhard.

The most critical comments about Trump came from the elder Bush, now 93, who told Updegrove in May 2016, "I don't like him".

George Bush Sr and Jr, two former United States presidents, have never liked Donald Trump, and now they have gone on record with their blunt assessment of him, calling him a "blowhard" who doesn't know what it means to be the president of the country.

Drawing extensively on exclusive access and interviews with both Bush presidents, Updegrove reveals for the first time their influences and perspectives on each other's presidencies; their views on family, public service, and America's role in the world; and their unvarnished thoughts on Donald Trump, and the radical transformation of the Republican Party he now leads.

But in the new book, George Bush Sr confirmed that he voted for the rival party's candidate in Hillary Clinton.

A White House official reportedly told CNN that "if one presidential candidate can disassemble a political party, it speaks volumes about how strong a legacy its past two presidents really had".

However, at one point during the 2016 presidential campaign, the younger Bush confided to the author, "I'm anxious that I will be the last Republican president".

President Donald Trump is not a favorite in the extended Bush household.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders hit back at the former presidents in a statement.

Neither of the former Republican Presidents voted for Trump.

. "Donald Trump is everything that the Bush family is not", Updegrove told CNN. George HW Bush said he voted for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, while his son told Mr Updegrove he did not vote for anyone. If they were interested in continuing decades of costly mistakes, another establishment politician more concerned with putting politics over people would have won.
