'Lady Bird' breaks Rotten Tomatoes record

'Lady Bird' breaks Rotten Tomatoes record

1999's Toy Story 2 originally made the record with 163 Fresh reviews.

This all should be taken with the caveat that Rotten Tomatoes is not the be-all-end-all of movie criticism - though plenty has been said about that - but there's no denying that the review aggregator site has become a huge audience and box office influencer.

It's a real shame that we have to wait until February to see this movie in Ireland.

Move over, Toy Story 2.

The movie, which initially opened with a limited USA release earlier this month, has continued to win fans across the board, and on Monday, it surpassed Toy Story 2 to land the title of the film with the most consecutive “fresh” responses on the popular review site, with zero negative reactions.

There's an elite club of movies on Rotten Tomatoes that have earned a rating of 100 percent on the Tomatometer, indicating universal acclaim from critics. With this new Rotten Tomatoes record, the path forward for studio A24 (who won Best Picture a year ago with Moonlight) is pretty clear, and I wouldn't be surprised if Lady Bird ended up with nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Saoirse Ronan), Best Supporting Actress (Laurie Metcalf), and Best Original Screenplay. The A24 movie has received a 8.9/10 average critic rating, and is expected to be a strong contender at the Oscars next year - it's already been nominated for three Gotham Awards, including Best Actress, and four Film Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Actress and Best Feature. Lady Bird simply has the most positive reviews of any movie with a flawless, 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Want more perspective? "Citizen Kane" also has 100% positive critical response, with a 9.4 rating, but only 75 reviews total. That there has been such a warm reception is a dream come true. Right now we're celebrating the moment, and Gerwig herself is singing.

She added, "We are all on cloud nine and using our tomato emoji more than we ever thought possible".
