New York Cop Hailed as 'Humble Hero' for Stopping Attacker

He was one of four officers responding to a call from Stuyvesant High School at 345 Chambers St. on Tuesday afternoon. He was brandishing two guns, which later turned out to be a pellet gun and paintball pistol.

"I want commend the response of our NYPD officer that was on post near the location who stopped the carnage moments after it began", NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill told reporters at a press conference Tuesday evening.

"He was a hero", said Gov. Andre Cuomo.

Nash and his partner, John Hasiotis, raced to a gruesome sight: A man in a truck had slammed into a school bus after mowing down people in a bike lane.

After demanding that Saipov surrender, Nash opened fire, hitting him in the abdomen, and consequently, detained the suspect.

O'Neill and Mayor Bill de Blasio said they visited Nash at the hospital after the attack.

"While we mourn the bad loss of life and the injuries to innocent people we are proud of and grateful for the quick action of a team of police officers who responded to cries for help and took charge of a chaotic and unsafe situation". After he fired nine shots, Nash was taken to the hospital for ringing in his ears but was otherwise uninjured. "So in typical fashion of an NYPD cop, he thinks what he did was not an act of heroism". But Nash didn't know that when he confronted the suspect, O'Neill said.

"He seems like a nice guy, we feel safer now knowing that there's a hero in our neighborhood", said neighbor Margie Cortina. "He did a good job", neighbor Gene Boles said.

Police investigate the scene at a bike path in lower Manhattan after a motorist drove onto the path near the World Trade Center memorial, striking and killing several people on October 31, 2017, in NY.

Nash, a 28-year-old Long Island native, joined the force in 2012.

Federal prosecutors in NY have already filed terrorism charges against an Uzbek immigrant in the deadly truck attack on a NY bike path identified as 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov. They showed great courage.
