Robinho sentenced to nine years in prison for sexual assault

Brazilian star Robinho has been sentenced to nine years in prison for sexual assault, according to reports in Italy.

A statement on the Brazilian's Instagram feed read: "We would like to clarify that he has already defended himself against the accusations, affirming that he did not participate in the episode". Every legal action is now under consideration.

Italian news agency ANSA reported that five other men were also accused of violently sexually assaulting an Albanian woman and that another member of the group, Ricardo Falco, was also sentenced to nine years in jail.

His transfer to City, for £32.5m, made him the most expensive player in British football, but after two years Robinho was sold to AC Milan for roughly £15m.

Robinho moved to Europe amid much hype in 2005 when he joined Real Madrid from Santos - but he only showed his talent intermittently.

Former Real Madrid and Manchester City star Robinho is now playing in his homeland for Atletico Mineiro.

Robinho, 33, who played for Milan between 2010 and 2014 scoring 25 goals in 108 appearances, denied the charges.

He then had spells at his first club Santos again, AC Milan, Guangzhou Evergrande before he joined Atletico Mineiro. He is now with Atletico Mineiro and made his last appearance for the national team against Colombia in January.
