Three US carriers lead naval drill aimed at N. Korea

The USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier arrives in the South Korean port city of Busan on October 21, 2017.

Seoul and Beijing also agreed to swiftly restore bilateral exchanges in all fields based on their recent agreement to normalize relations following a period of conflict over South Korea's deployment of the THAAD missile defense system.

Three U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier strike groups are scheduled to conduct joint drills with the Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) over the next few days in a show of force against North Korea, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said on Friday.

The United States and South Korea on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017, started joint naval exercises that will involve three US aircraft carriers in what military officials describe as a clear warning to North Korea.

"The strike force plans to conduct air defense drills, sea surveillance, replenishments at sea, defensive air combat training, close-in coordinated maneuvers, and other training", said a statement from the Navy's 7th Fleet, which is responsible for monitoring the Pacific including North Korea.

Trump also warned North Korea not to underestimate the United States in a speech to the South Korean parliament on Wednesday, while offering leader Kim Jong-Un a better future if he gives up his nuclear ambitions.

This came amid the U.S. President Donald Trump's Asia visit, which was largely focused on about the North Korean nuclear threat.

Bong Young-shik, an expert on regional relations at South Korea's Yonsei University, said: "China's economic retaliation only pushed Korea closer into the trilateral alliance between Japan and the US".

Tensions have been running high since North Korea test-fired two intercontinental ballistic missiles in July, conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test on September 3 and flew ballistic missiles over Japan on August 29 and September 15.

"China insists on the implementation of the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, maintaining peace and stability on the Peninsula, and resolving the existing problems through dialogue and consultation", said the Chinese leader.
