White House Brushes Off Former Aide's Guilty Plea

She did note that Trump has no intentions to fire Mueller.

Sanders's assertion is at odds with the indictment issued by the Special Counsel investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, which states Papadopoulos was encouraged to meet with Russian officials by campaign officials.

"What Papadopoulos did was lie and that's on him, not the campaign", said Mrs. Sanders.

Papadopoulos was one of five people announced to be part of Trump's foreign policy team in March of previous year.

Both pleaded not guilty to the charges Monday afternoon.

"There's clear evidence of the Clinton campaign colluding with Russian intelligence to spread disinformation and smear the president to influence the election", Sanders said.

Sanders is of course correct but only a tiny number of these people are "sitting at a table with then-candidate Trump at a national security meeting".

She said Trump hasn't changed his principles on a tax overhaul. The White House spokeswoman denied that the campaign aide was acting in an "official capacity" when he communicated with alleged Russian-tied individuals about "dirt" on Hillary Clinton.

According to court documents, Papadopolous' false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation concerned his contact with a professor with connections to the Russian government about "thousands of emails" that could damage Hillary Clinton.

She also dismissed "today's announcement" - the indictment of Manafort and Gates - as having "nothing to do with the President, has nothing to do with the President's campaign or campaign activity", reiterating President Trump's first response. Trump spent much of Monday watching TV upstairs in his private residence, "seething", a Republican close to the White House tells CNN.

Papadopoulos, who is 30 years old, joined the Trump campaign in early March 2016 as a foreign adviser.
