Apple announces iMac Pro release date

The iMac Pro features new apple custom silicon: the T2 chip.

Apple's flagship desktop system, the iMac Pro will be available in Australia later this week. The chassis houses four Thunderbolt 3 USB-Type C ports, four USB 3 full-sized ports, and an SDXC card slot. It has also added a new 1080p FaceTime HD camera and stereo speakers with four microphones. It comes with a new Magic Keyboard, and you can choose between a Magic Mouse 2 or a Magic Trackpad 2.

After a really long time, Apple has finally updated their iMac line of desktop computers and this time they are going all out.

"T$3 he iMac Pro is a graphics powerhouse-I continually marveled at how crisp and clean everything was rendered with no apparent overhead or impact on performance", writes aerospace engineer Craig Hunter. It will be an upgrade to its Mac Pro, which was released in 2013. According to a report in 9to5 Mac, the 4- and 18-core iMac Pro versions are likely to be available in late 2018.

The iMac Pro isn't meant for everyday consumers, targeting professionals working in demanding fields like video editing, virtual reality, and real-time 3D rendering.

But $5,000 should get you a lot of computer for your money. That's not part of the iMac Pro. "But for the hardware inside and the actual specs you're getting it's actually a fairly-priced machine".

London-based video editor Thomas Carter wrote up his initial impressions for Randi Altman's postPerspective.

"I spent just short of a week running the machine through my typical workflows in aerospace engineering and software development, and also ran some benchmarks and tests". With Microsoft Corp. designing iMac Pro competitors such as the Surface Studio, Apple had to up its game to keep its Pro users happy. Every once in a while, a product comes along that has a similar but reverse effect on me - it's a product that's so compelling, so exciting, so gorgeous to look at, that it causes my wallet to heat up and maybe even burst into flames.
