Big blaze at Manchester apartment block

Fire crews tackled the blaze which broke out at an apartment building in central Manchester.

GMFRS tweeted: "The fire had spread to multiple floors but we have things well under control here".

He also disclosed that one person had been taken to hospital for treatment after inhaling smoke as the fire raged.

Firefighters battled a blaze that broke out in a 12-story building in Manchester, in the United Kingdom, today.

The ninth floor of the building - located in the city's Northern Quarter - was the most affected, according to Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Services (GMFRS).

A spokeswoman for the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) said resources are at the scene but no further information is now available.

It is not yet clear whether the building has been fully evacuated or if there are any casualties.

Onlookers said the fire appeared to be have been extinguished, but dramatic footage of the blaze engulfing flats has been posted on social media. "Firefighters along with colleagues from the Police and Ambulance service have done an wonderful job to tackle this hard incident!"

The MP added that there are paramedics at the scene but no serious injuries are known.

The businessman, who lives in the Northern Quarter, said the firefighters "controlled it well" but described the incident as "pretty scary".
