Google might set up Pixel 2 retail stores in India

Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. The plan is to set up "experience centres". However, Google is also expected to use its stores to sell other hardware, such as the Chromebook Pixel, Google Home, Google Home Mini, Chromecast, Chromecast Ultra, and Daydream View.

Google is preparing to open brick-and-mortar stores in India to shore up sales of its Pixel smartphones in one of the world's fastest-growing markets for the devices where the tech giant is lagging behind competition, said three people with knowledge of the matter.

Google was reportedly encouraged to open new locations after the massive interest that followed its pop-up Google Pixel 2 stores around the country, which included the High Street Phoenix shopping center in Mumbai and the Mall of India in Delhi-NCR. In the past, Google has relied on the Play Store online and third-party retailers to move units. "They got a flavor of how physical stores are also important because you can't explain numerous features online", a top mall executive told the site.

A few years back Google had partnered with Spice mobiles to open dedicated Android stores called AndroidLand.

Spice had said it planned to open 50 AndroidLand outlets in 18 months but the venture folded up with the two stores in Select Citywalk in Delhi and The Great India Place Mall in Noida shuttered due to poor sales.

As such, expect Google's stores to heavily push its Pixel smartphones in an effort to boost smartphone sales in the country.

It's still unclear whether Google will own and operate the stores itself, or whether it'll go the franchise route instead.

This isn't the first time Google is dipping its feet into the offline space.

Rival Apple too is planning to setup single-branded store in India since mid-2106, but could do so, as it was facing issues with regard to government's clause for retailers to locally source at least 30% of the raw goods sold in such shops.
