Mueller removed top Federal Bureau of Investigation agent after anti-Trump texts

A top FBI official working on special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the election was removed over the summer after it was revealed that he'd allegedly sent anti-Trump text messages.

Trump's brief non-response to the Flynn news comes after Senate Republicans passed tax reform legislation in the overnight hours that nobody - not even the president - has read. If today's tweet is true, he then lied to Comey to get him to drop an investigation, knowing full well Flynn had lied to the FBI. Flynn Jr. also acted briefly as his father's chief of staff during the transition, but was forced to resign after his frequent tweets on conspiracy theories. The New York Times and Washington Post report that the agent, Peter Strzok, as the FBI's deputy head of counterintelligence, played a major role in the investigations into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server as well as the possible links between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

Original post, 5:22 p.m.: So, Michael Flynn pleaded guilty to a single charge of lying to the FBI and is cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.

Flynn resigned in February, less than a month into Trump's term of office.

The President fired the former US Army Lieutenant General in February for misleading Vice-President Mike Pence about the extent of his conversations a year ago with Russia's ambassador to the United States. "I hope you can let this go", Trump said to Comey, according to Comey's memo on the conversation. He is a good guy. Court records say Flynn contacted the Russian ambassador on December 22 about the Trump administration's opposition to a United Nations resolution against Israeli settlements.

White House officials did not respond to questions on Saturday about Mr Trump's altered explanation as to why he fired Flynn. According to the newspapers, federal law enforcement officials became concerned that Trump and his supporters could use the exposure of the text messages to attack the credibility of Mueller's investigation. Mr. Horowitz is scrutinizing Mr. Comey's decision to hold a news conference in July 2016 to announce that the bureau was recommending that Mrs. Clinton not be charged, and how Mr. Comey reopened the investigation just days before the 2016 election.

A plea agreement suggests that Flynn provided information to prosecutors beneficial to Mueller's investigation.

Trump told NBC News in May that "I was going to fire Comey knowing there was no good time to do it" and "I said to myself - I said, you know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made-up story".
