Several people killed in Christmas Eve plane crash in Florida

Officials said they believe fog was a factor in the crash.

The Cessna 340 plane that crashed at the Bartow Airbase in Florida on December 24, 2017.

The pilot was identified as John Shannon, 70, of Lakeland, Florida.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office says a twin-engine plane crashed Sunday morning at the end of a runway at Bartow Municipal Airport. Victoria Shannon Worthington, 26, and her husband, Peter Worthington Jr., 27, also were on board.

Shannon-Worthington was a teacher at Baltimore International Academy Elementary/Middle School in Baltimore.

"For unknown reasons, but likely related to the fog, it crashed shortly after takeoff", the statement read.

Polk County Fire Rescue arrived to find the plane engulfed in flames at 7:31 a.m. and managed to extinguish the blaze about 15 minutes later spokeswoman Tina Mann said.

Victoria Shannon and Peter Worthington were married in June at Baltimore's George Peabody Library, according to a wedding announcement. "It's a tragedy of monumental proportions when it happens on Christmas Eve".

No further information was immediately released.

The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration investigators will probe the crash.
