Woman dead, man injured in 'savage' pit bull attack

A woman was killed and her husband was injured in an dog attack in Bell County, and officials are asking residents to be on the lookout for one of the animals.

It is unclear what drove the dogs to attack their neighbors, but experts say it's unlikely that pit bulls just turn bad.

The Bell County Sheriff's department said two dogs "savagely" attacked a couple, killing the wife. Her husband Johnny Saylor found her in front of their house after he had been attacked by the two dogs. Her husband, Johnny Saylor, rushed outside to help only to be attacked by the dogs as well, according to WKRN. When he came outside, he shot one of the dogs in the chest as it lunged at him.

The Bell County Sheriff's department confirmed to WYMT a woman was killed following a dog attack. The other dog ran off near Country Lane.

At the time of the attack, Lankford was in the Bell County Detention Center for crimes related to assault, domestic violence, and unlawful imprisonment. "Under no circumstances are you to engage this unsafe animal".

The call came in around 10:20 a.m. Sunday morning.

"She loved animals and every morning she would go out and put wild bird seed out on a metal roof of a little work shed they had there and feed then birds", Bell County coroner Jay Steele, who has known the couple for the last 30 years, told ABC affiliate WATE.

Lorraine Saylor was declared dead at the scene. The man was taken to a nearby hospital, officials said. They say the woman died from her injuries in the attack. The Bell County Sherriff's Department responded to a dispatch call and found the injured couple.
