At The Movies - Oscar Nominations

Human error at last year's show led to "La La Land" mistakenly being named the best picture victor before the actual victor, "Moonlight", was announced.

"Dunkirk" and "Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri" were also emerged as strong contenders with 8 and 7 nominations each, respectively.

Oscar voters put forward nine best-picture nominees: "The Shape of Water", "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri", "Lady Bird", "Get Out", "Darkest Hour", "The Post", "Dunkirk", "Call Me By Your Name" and "Phantom Thread".

But it seems the rumours surrounding Franco's alleged inappropriate behaviour may have impacted his chance at an Academy Award nomination.

Haddish, a huge hit in "Girls Trip", bantered her way through the proceedings, injecting some needed energy into the early morning affair and getting co-announcer Andy Serkis into the spirit.

The Oscar ceremony will be held on March 4 at Hollywood's Dolby Theater in the western USA city of Los Angeles.

For best actor, Day-Lewis will battle for a golden statuette with Timothee Chalamet ("Call Me by Your Name"), Daniel Kaluuya ("Get Out"), Gary Oldman ("Darkest Hour") and Denzel Washington ("Roman J. Israel, Esq."). Laurie Metcalf ("Lady Bird") is still in the mix but realistically would need a win at the BAFTAs to remain in the hunt. Peele is also the fourth black writer to be nominated for best original screenplay, and the first in more than 25 years.

One snub the film did get was for Michael Stuhlbarg who some critics have already said should have been nominated for Supporting Actor.

Jenkins, who was nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category for playing Giles, a lonely gay illustrator with a crush on the counterman at his local diner, got earnest real quick about his second Oscar nod: "It's humbling and it's really exciting". Just previous year, voters overlooked Casey Affleck's past settlements with women who accused him of sexual harassment to name him best actor.

The Disaster Artist did score an Oscar nomination for best adapted screenplay.

The first clip starred Wonder Woman star Gal sipping a cup of tea in a moving set to introduce the nominations for Production Design. "The Silence of the Lambs" won Best Picture in 1991, and while many consider it a horror movie, others peg it, too, in the thriller category.

The film is the streaming platform's first non-documentary to earn a citation from the Academy, which should get champagne bottles popping at Ted Sarandos HQ - and additionally, Rachel Morrison picked up a nod for best cinematography, becoming the first woman in Oscar history to get a nomination in that category.

There's no ironclad way to predict the Oscars - a couple thousand tight-lipped Hollywood insiders do not make the most easily pollable sample on the planet.
