Boston Is Among 20 Finalists For Amazon's Second Headquarters

"It further highlights how Mississauga's City Centre (downtown) office district has 3 million square feet within the larger 36 million square foot Metro West marketplace, and can readily accommodate Amazon's 500,000 square foot requirement and provides an opportunity to develop a campus similar to the Seattle layout".

None of those cities made the short list.

Cities made splashy attempts to attract the company's attention. Indeed, the majority of finalists are concentrated on the other side of the Mississippi: Atlanta, Austin, Chicago, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia, Raleigh and Washington, D.C. Toronto is the only finalist outside the United States.

Amazon has said it will build its second headquarters in North America, but LaMantia said he thinks the political climate in the usa, including the policies of President Donald Trump, will come into play.

Amazon, which plans to make a final decision this year, said it plans to invest more than US$5 billion on the second headquarters and create as many as 50,000 high-paying jobs.

During the Amazon proposal process, KC received a lot of positive feedback from Amazon, but the online retailer hasn't said why the city didn't make its Top 20 list released Thursday. "Getting from 238 to 20 was very tough -all the proposals showed tremendous enthusiasm and creativity", Amazon tweeted.

"I am thrilled that Amazon chose Montgomery County to advance in the selection process", said David Petr, President and CEO of the Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC). "It's hard to say whether all these places are in play or Amazon wanted to encourage continued competition", Mr. Kolko said.

"We responded to their RFP and worked with the Somerset County Business Partnership to pull together a package", explained Colin Driver, Somerville Economic Development director.

Mr. McMahon said the Maumee group achieved its goals.

Secondly, news of Maumee's site began to circulate outside Ohio.

"Apple is looking", said Pugh, "Whomever is out there looking for a great city to locate in, we'll be preparing a proposal for them as well". "And it's not like we lost the beauty contest".

"Frankly, it's helpful that we've now got it down to one city", Clark told The Canadian Press.

Amazon said in its announcement that it will take a deeper dive into the remaining cities' proposals and likely request more information. The tech company added that it will not hold a bidding process for its planned new USA campus like Amazon has done.

We took a look at key economic indicators for the 17 American cities on the HQ2 shortlist, including unemployment and underemployment rates, median salary, percentage of college-educated adults, and recent GDP growth.

"To me it's not so much what we have now as what we can be in the future", Gengelbach said. "While we always knew that our bid was considered a long shot, we are excited that it is already serving as a template for other businesses that now have New Hampshire on their radar".
