Kennedy is seen as a rising star in the party and is a closely watched member of the House Democratic Caucus because of his famous last name and his future ambitions, Politico reported.

"From health care to economic justice to civil rights, the Democratic agenda stands in powerful contrast to President Trump's broken promises to American families", said Kennedy in a statement.

Kennedy has been floated as a potential 2020 presidential candidate and political commentators have long pinned hopes for a Kennedy revival in Washington DC on his shoulders.

"Congressman Kennedy is a relentless fighter for working Americans", Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said in a press release announcing his selection. "Our vision for this union is guided by a simple belief that equality and economic dignity should be afforded to every American".

Next week, the young Kennedy will follow in the footsteps of his other great-uncle, Edward Kennedy, who delivered the Democrats' official response to Ronald Reagan's State of the Union address in 1982. "I'm honored to have been chosen by Leader Pelosi and Leader Schumer to deliver our party's response".

Kennedy is the grandson of late Sen.

Virginia Delegate Elizabeth Guzma will deliver the Democratic response in Spanish.

Rep. Maxine Waters, a California Democrat, will speak at the top of a BET News special after Trump delivers the State of the Union, a BET spokesperson told BuzzFeed News.
