Serena Williams to skip this year's Australian Open

"The true champion Serena is has been demonstrated in the Herculean efforts she has made over the past few months in her desire to play the Australian Open", he said.

Barely ten days to the kick off of this year's Australian Open, defending champion, Serena Williams, has announced her withdrawal from the tournament.

Williams was pregnant when she won at Melbourne Park previous year, her Open-era record 23rd Grand Slam singles title.

The 36-year-old American last week played her first match since giving birth in September. "With that being said, and even though I am disappointed about it, I've decided not to compete in the Australian Open this year".

Williams was facing major problems in serving last month but clarified that she missed being on the court.

"However, the memory of last year's Open is one that I will carry with me and Olympia and I look forward to coming back again".

In her announcement, Williams said that she will soon return to the Australian Open, but will first focus on her daughter. "It was never going to be good enough for her to just compete, she wants to give herself the best chance to win". "I've been in constant contact with Serena and her team and know this is why she has pushed it and pushed it until the 11th hour to make her final decision", he said.

The 2018 Australian Open will begin on January 15. Her confidence was reportedly shaken after losing to Jelena Ostapenko in her comeback match at the French Open.

On Thursday, men's world number 22 Kei Nishikori withdrew because of a wrist injury.

Several other stars, including top-ranked Rafael Nadal, six-time champion Novak Djokovic and 2014 victor Stan Wawrinka, also are dealing with injuries.
