"It's an honour to pick up this award", said Ant.

David Walliams, Simon Cowell, Paul Hollywood and fought over who's the best TV judge while Love Island and Bake Off competed for Best Challenge Show.

Ant McPartlin and his sidekick Declan Donnelly won a hat-trick of prizes at Britain's National Television Awards, which are voted for by the public.

In 2017, Ant had a highly-publicised battle with prescription drug addiction, followed by the breakdown of his marriage to Lisa Armstrong, his wife of 11 years.

You'd think the shine would have gone off it after all this time, but they were especially grateful for this one.

The pair took away three awards on the night, including the Challenge Show, The Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award and Best Presenter.

Dec said: "Do you know what, every year we get here the nerves are the same as the first time we sat down there, the first time we were nominated". I personally would like to thank all my family and friends, I love you, thank you very much.

"Thank you so much, I'm shaking", he said. It's helped me get through.

Earlier they said they were "racing from film set" to the ceremony at London's O2 Arena and joked they were "hoping we get there before the end".

"I've had a very tricky year, but you know it's great to get back to work and we loved the last series of I'm a Celebrity and we're now shooting stuff for Britain's Got Talent and Takeaway".

Whilst on stage accepting the Entertainment Award - which was renamed to honour the legendary entertainer who passed away in August past year - they said: "It's an honour to pick this award up, the Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award. We thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts".

Ant and Dec returned to the stage, winning the category with their Saturday Night Takeaway show. Beloved TV nature expert Sir David Attenborough and the team behind his acclaimed show Blue Planet II were handed the Impact Award, while Broadchurch won the Crime Drama gong.
