Airbnb announces new features for 'high end' travellers

"We don't want the history of San Francisco, which was a very hard history over the last seven years, to happen in every city", Chesky said.

Additionally it will also revamp the "Superhost" programme for hosts. While the company's motto is "Everyone can belong anywhere", co-founder Brian Chesky said that their global footprint has helped them achieve the "everywhere" but Airbnb wasn't yet for "everyone". Whereas a family may want to rent a home that has a playground for children, for example, a business traveler may just want something clean and simple, and "collections" is meant to show people they kind of accommodation they would most likely prefer.

For a startup that began in 2007 with just two air beds, Airbnb has gone a long way - and a lot more ambitious - as it marks its 10 year of founding with plans to go "Plus". At the same time, it'll have new property listing categories for more unusual locations, including "Boutique" and "Unique Space".

Hosts and guests are the heart of Airbnb.

Perks like stocked fridges, to airport pick up and drop off, to access to fitness facilities were some of the suggestions given.

"Every Airbnb Plus home is one-of-a-kind, thoughtfully designed, and equipped with a standard set of amenities - whether you're in a private room or have the entire place to yourself", states Airbnb Plus' official website.

Airbnb said its hosts have earned more than $41 billion since the platform first launched in 2008, and the company has had more than 300 million guest check-ins across tens of thousands of different cities. These new categories should roll out some time this summer.

"We are building one of the world's largest home databases", shared Chesky.

Airbnb is expected to make a public initial offering from 2019. "Today we will show you our roadmap so that Airbnb can be for everyone". Later this year will be added Collections for Social stays, Weddings, Honeymoons, Group getaways and Dinner parties.

The program will initially cover about 2,000 properties in 13 cities - Austin, Texas; Barcelona, Spain; Cape Town, South Africa; Chicago; Los Angeles; London; Melbourne, Australia; Milan; Rome; San Francisco; Shanghai, Sydney, and Toronto.

The deluxe service strand is geared toward discerning guests who demand the most photogenic homes and avuncular hosts, with only those properties deemed good enough to tick off a 100-point checklist covering everything from comfort, to design and cleanliness allowed entry.

Guests can therefore have a peace of mind that these listings are guaranteed to be of excellent quality. If they are selected, the hosts get design consultation and expert photography, and their properties will get top placement on Airbnb's app.

Accommodation listings site Airbnb is to expand into the luxury market by targeting wealthy travellers by offering boutique hotels and properties for "trips of a lifetime".
